The Whole World is Watching
Welcome back! This Tuesday, Shoghig Halajian, Corrado Salzano, and Sarah Sandler (Session 21 of the École du Magasin) will be talk with us about their curatorial project in Grenoble this Summer – Whole World is Watching – and their research into the local Vidéogazette collective (1973-1976). Vidéogazette was a “community televised journal”, produced by the inhabitants of Grenoble. Halajian, Salzano, and Sandler’s research formed the starting point for this exhibition and online project.
Modelled after Vidéogazette’s broadcasting studio “Agora”, The Whole World is Watching transforms the Magasin’s auditorium into an exhibition space and brings together archival video work by Pierre Bismuth, Natalie Bookchin, Richard Serra, Vidéogazette and new commissions by the Journal of Aesthetics and Protest, Pierre Musso, Gail Pickering, and The Public School Philadelphia.
Taking its title from the 1968 anti-war demonstrations outside the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, The Whole World is Watching explores Vidéogazette’s desire for social transformation accompanying 1970’s video innovations along with the forms of control that paradoxically resulted from the democratization of technological equipment.
The exhibition press release brings up a lot of interesting questions that we won’t repeat now (but you can read about it here!). Let’s talk about these and more together on Tuesday night.
See you then!
