Potluck chat: Thank Tank 2009: Centennial Lay State of Our Union
Tonight we’re having a brainstorming session for Thank Tank 2009: Centennial Lay State of Our Union.
Here’s a little more info:
In an attempt to evaluate our current state of affairs and conjure questions of agency and communication we are reaching out to artists and creative practitioners and asking them to put together performances for the ConfluxCity festival on September 20th 2009. Imagine Hyde Park “Speakers Corner” style events in which a total of 5-7 individuals and collectives get up on their respective soapboxes and loosely address the following questions at different locations in New York:
What is your prognosis of the current human condition?
What is your prediction of the state of affairs in 100 years?
What 100-year long artistic initiative can we launch to benefit future progeny?
Commencing on Saturday 9/20 in New York, CLSU participants and passerby will receive pamphlets containing event locations where invited artists wiill present state of the union addresses in varied performative manners. This opening ceremony will also unveil the time capsule container. Mapped by red string, state of the union addresses will take place on soap boxes at strategic walking points. This finale will present documentation of the speeches, which will be placed in the capsule and sealed. The capsule will later be expanded upon at Thank Tank 2009 follow up events in Los Angeles and Philadelphia, where various long-term creative initiatives will be launched.
Thank Tank is an ongoing no-budget, grassroots educational and performative experiment which takes place annually. This platform approaches art making in a wholistic fashion, blurring art and life through an amalgamation of performance, conversation and workshops. Please contact us if you have any interest in participating in future projects.
